One of the great challenges of in vitro fertilization techniques is to be able to guarantee the viability of the transferred embryos to be implanted into the maternal uterus and be able to give birth to a healthy baby.
Taking into account that the mitochondria are responsible for providing most of the energy necessary for cellular activity, the measurement of mitochondrial DNA may become a good future option, according to the satisfactory results of our study published in Fertility & Sterility.1 as a SEMINAL CONTRIBUTION in the September 2015 issue.
Igenomix is the first laboratory in the world to place this mitochondrial biomarker at the disposal of patients in order to solve infertility problems. Dr. Carlos Simon, Scientific Director of Igenomix, explains that “it’s a new measurement where we detect the mitochondrial DNA and this helps us to be able to predict embryo viability, that is to say, which embryo would have the greatest possibilities of being implanted into the mother out of those with normal chromosomes.”
